When I have a craving for Italian food, I head to Papa Dan's in Palm Desert.

In the Bristol Farms Center at the corner of Monterey and Country Club, the eatery is easily reached no matter what end of the valley you live in.

A warm, inviting atmosphere and incredible aromas always greet me when I open the door. There is never a doubt that when you go to Papa Dan's, you're going to experience one of those ahhh moments.

You know the feeling. It happens when the pizza arrives at your table. You get a whiff of those amazing Italian spices, then savor that first incredible bite. Hot, gooey cheese stretches into one long string as you pull it away from your mouth.

A 25-year affair

Papa Dan's opened its Palm Desert location in 1984, and it has gained a reputation for having incredible food and great service and continually adding new surprises to the menu.

Papa Dan's has spiced up its lunch menu. No need to travel around town searching for a reasonably priced sandwich, salad or other lunchtime fare.

Any restaurant that's been around since the 1980s definitely knows what it's doing.

For a mere $5.25, enjoy an amazing tuna salad or chicken salad sandwich with your choice of bread, chips and a pickle.

Or choose the roast beef, ham or turkey for the same price. With today's rising prices, this is an incredible inflation-fighting deal.

For all of you BLT fans out there, don't even think of going anywhere else to try one. Papa Dan's has never been skimpy on portions, and the sandwiches are no different.

For heartier appetites, definitely choose one of Papa Dan's amazing sub sandwiches.

Enjoy a heaping portion of pastrami or salami for $5.50.

Since the eatery makes its pizza dough with only the best ingredients, you know the bread is going to be the best.

All of you Philly cheese steak fans can get your fix at Papa Dan's, too.

Wonderfully seasoned roast beef, grilled onions and peppers, plus mushrooms and, of course, cheese, is yours for just $6.25.

Other hot sandwiches include the all-time favorite tuna melt and the classic albacore tuna sandwich topped with cheddar cheese, tomato and your choice of bread.

Looking for something a little lighter for lunch? My favorite salad of all time is the tossed Cobb, and Papa Dan's does it right. It's got generous portions of mixed greens, turkey, tomatoes, eggs, avocado, bacon, cheddar cheese, bleu cheese and is tossed with ranch dressing ($6.95).

It's healthy and economical all at the same time.

So the next time you're heading out the door for a delicious meal, steer the car to Papa Dan's.

No matter what side of the political aisle you're on, Papa Dan's serves up a stimulus plan that we can all endorse.
