Ever since I saw the movie "Julie and Julia," I've had a craving for classic French cuisine.
There are two ways to accomplish this goal: Either I can dig out my copy of "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" or just let someone else do the work. Thanks to Palmie French Restaurant, the decision was easy.
Located on Town Center Way in Palm Desert, this cozy restaurant, which resembles a French country inn, transports you to the other side of the Atlantic. Dine on the intimate patio, complete with twinkling lights, or inside where the walls are adorned with posters of French seaside resorts. Owners Alaine and Martine Clerc specialize in creating homemade, traditional French dishes with the freshest ingredients.
From the moment a freshly baked baguette arrives at your table with a crock of butter on the side, you know that you are in for a memorable experience.
The night we stopped by, the soupe du jour was a delightful vichyssoise. Of course, French onion soup is always featured. Served in a bowl, it is practically a meal in itself. Pair this with a glass of wine from a list that features many highly rated selections.
For a completely decadent appetizer, try the Souffle aux deux Fromages (warm parmesan and Swiss cheese soufflé, $16.95). Equally impressive are the fresh tomatoes and mozzarella served on a warm pastry drizzled with a basil vinaigrette.
You'll enjoy large portions at Palmie, including the Lake Superior white fish with a fragrant lemon caper butter sauce that was featured the day we visited.
Served with fresh spinach and a creamy rice side dish, it complemented the freshness of the fish perfectly. And, once you take your first bite of the Jarret di'Agneau braise Mediterranean (braised lamb shank, $25.95), you'll know that is has been slow cooking for hours and simmered in a red wine reduction sauce. The flavor is light, and the lamb so tender that it will melt in your mouth.
A beautiful array of fresh vegetables is included.
Julia would be proud. of this classic French cuisine served with unpretentious service in a warm, cozy atmosphere.
