For those of you who have ever slapped down a burger on the backyard grill and managed to cook it without turning it into a cinder, congratulations.
For the rest of us, there’s Harry’s.
Jon and Margot Bayouth, born and raised in Tulsa, Okla., recently opened Harry’s Oklahoma Style Smokehouse BBQ in La Quinta. This little slice of heaven is tucked away on Washington Street behind Louise’s Pantry.
When you walk in and see the peanut-filled cowboy hats (and shells on the floor), checkered tablecloths and a big roll of paper towels on the table, get ready. Roll up your sleeves, tuck that napkin under your chin and prepare for some serious eating.
Harry’s smokes all of its meats in a state-of-the-art Southern Pride Smoker. This process, known as closed-pit cooking, involves hours of preparation. They even fly in the hickory wood straight from Arkansas and soak it to bring out the scents that blend so well with the meats.
Harry’s motto is that cooking “low and slow” is the way to go.
Harry’s prices are reasonable. All dinners — available throughout the day — include molasses baked beans, roll and your choice of homemade potato salad, creamy cole slaw or dirty rice.
The BBQ chicken breast ($12.95) is so moist and tender that it practically falls off the bone.
Choose a combo of baby-back ribs, BBQ chicken and BBQ tri-tip for $19.85. Rib fans will have a field day with the ultimate Ribfest. Chow down on two baby backs, two St. Louis cuts and a beef rib for $15.85.
Sandwich meals, which include a side, are a downright bargain. For $10.75, try BBQ pulled pork topped with creamy cole slaw. Also, be sure to try the BBQ hot link sausage sandwich ($8.75) and the sliced BBQ tri-tip sandwich for $10.75.
Harry’s features a large assortment of a la carte items, including 10 buffalo wings ($8.75), a full pound of Harry’s rib tips ($9.75) and half racks of beef, St. Louis cut and baby backs from $10.85 to $14.85.
In the mood for Harry’s but just want to plunk down on the couch and enjoy the game? Call ahead and everything will be packed and ready to go at the pick-up window.
Large sides (16 oz. each) of baked beans, homemade potato salad, creamy cole slaw, homemade peach cobbler and others are available for $5.75 to $6.25. And don’t forget the cornbread with honey butter ($2.75).
Harry’s BBQ is so authentic you just may walk out the door with a Southern twang. And feel free to throw a few peanut shells on the floor while you’re there.
