It may be a couple hour's drive from the Pacific, but Frankie's Fresh Fish in Indio has long been a great place for fresh seafood and terrific sushi.
Owner Frankie Nakasone and his team are experts in guiding you through their menu, whether you're new to the sushi experience or a seasoned veteran.
The menu starts with varieties of nigiri sushi, which is a slice of fish (cooked or uncooked) pressed by hand on a pad of rice. Choose from tuna, halibut, salmon, ika (squid), tai (snapper) and many more for $1.90-$3.90 each. Or, if you prefer yours cooked, sample the ebi (shrimp), octopus or fried shrimp.
If sashimi is more to your liking, order the six-piece platter and choose among tuna, salmon or yellowtail. Can't make up your mind? Frankie's offers the seven-piece combination. Keep it all for yourself or make some new friends at the sushi bar and keep the plates moving.
Frankie's offers some of the best lunchtime values around. Check out the specials posted by the entrance or enjoy one of the bento (single portion) offerings for $5.65. The Sushi Bento comes with six slices of California rolls, or if you have a craving for those ocean breezes, order the Beach House, which comes with four large panko fried shrimp. All of these great deals come with steamed rice, fresh salad with house ginger dressing, egg roll and tori karaage (marinated fried chicken).
During lunch hours, try the teriyaki chicken or beef bowl served on a heaping portion of steamed rice for $6.50 and you'll also get a 16 oz. beverage.
During evening hours, feast on grilled salmon, tempura sand dabs, lemon pepper fish and shrimp, plus baked lobster.
So when you're in the mood for great seafood, the desert will do just fine. Who needs an ocean view?
