Nestled among the high-end shops and art galleries located on Palm Desert’s El Paseo sits Armando’s, an authentic Mexican eatery sure to quench your craving for delectable south-of-the-border cuisine.
When I first moved here I recall a few warnings about Armando’s ‘jet-fuel powered’ margaritas. I’m told one drink has the potency of four, but it wasn’t alcohol that eventually brought me there, it was that the intoxicating aroma of spicy Mexican rice and simmering enchiladas wafting down El Paseo while I scoured the 50 percent off rack for guiltless material scores.
Food: While it may not be the healthiest option on the menu, I usually opt for the deep-fried goodness of a chimichanga, and Armando’s chicken specialty didn’t disappoint. The meal was accompanied by a cup of zesty chicken tortilla soup, a generous serving of black beans, fresh guacamole, sour cream and Mexican rice served with sautéed onions-which made for a bright, colorful dish.
My dining partner in crime sampled the rich chicken enchiladas mole, which was served with a side of piping hot chicken tortilla soup, Mexican rice and refried beans. I shouldn't be shocked by how well this chocolate-laced chili sauce goes with just about everything and this delicious entree was no exception. Who could have guessed throwing together some chili powder, broth, garlic salt and chocolate would become a unique delicacy? Thank God for imaginative moves in the kitchen.
Armando’s has a wide menu that features heaping portions of traditional Mexican entrees including carnitas, carne asada, flautas, quesadillas, enchiladas, tamales and burritos. Expect to pay about $15 to $20 per meal, but trust me the food is fantastic and the portions are huge.
The Drinks: Going back to earlier referenced margaritas… yes, they are very strong. By all means enjoy, but please designate a driver if you plan on tossing back more than one of their signature Cadillac cocktails. From what I hear, and I’m not speaking from personal experience, two of these will have you seriously hurting the following day.
The full bar is also stocked with wine and specialty beers, including Bohemia, Heineken, Dos XX and more.
Décor: The restaurant features a warm color palate complete with tile floors and golden colored walls. The large, outdoor patio, featuring window boxes overflowing with multicolored blooms, is very popular with locals and an ideal spot for people watching.
Insider Tips: Armando’s is very popular among snowbirds and locals during season so if you have a large group, and prefer not to wait for a table, make sure to call ahead.
Bottom Line: In a valley filled with dozens of Mexican dining options, the combination of stiff drinks, a cool atmosphere, and great food make Armando's stand out from some of its competitors. Its convenient location on El Paseo should make this eatery a regular stop for any local diner.
