Don Diego’s in Indian Wells has been cooking up traditional Mexican entrees since 1981.  With heaping portions, fresh ingredients and a reputation for fabulous service, it’s easy to see why locals keep coming back for more.

The vibe:  Dim lighting, sprawling tables and super friendly service coupled with a laid-back atmosphere make Don Diego’s an opportune spot for an evening meal.  Laughter is always audible around the bar area and dining room patrons emit a welcoming vibe that’s evident as soon as you set foot inside.  Don Diego’s strolling maestro puts the icing on the cake, though. He’s talented, can make up a rhyme at the drop of a hat and even sang to me while I was sneaking a few pictures.

The food: While there are roughly 247 valley restaurants where you can grub on a spicy south of the border fix, I was significantly impressed by Don Diego’s fare.  I probably looked a bit like a rabid dog tearing into a piece of red meat as soon as chips and salsa were placed in front of my line of vision, but the addictive salsa kept calling to me.  The crispy chiminchangas ($13.95) are just as addictive, served piping hot with a side of  resh guacamole, Spanish rice and cheesy, refried beans.  I can honestly say they were some of the best chiminchangas I have ever tasted. No joke.

Of course other Mexican favorites including tacos, burritos and enchiladas are available, as well as steaks and seafood options.

The drinks:  House wines by the glass, margaritas and bottled beer such as Negro Modelo Especial (about $4)  are specialties at Don Diego’s full bar.  My only regret was not ordering a huge, blended strawberry margarita.  A gentleman dining beside the bar must have seen my eyes widen to the size of saucers when I caught a glimpse of his delicious drink.  Served in a martini glass the size of my head, the drink was an awesome alcoholic treat.

Bottom line:  If you’re into awesome food, great drinks, friendly service and a dude on guitar armed with quick wit and musical know-how, you’re bound to enjoy this gem.
