''As American as tomato pie...?'' Tomato pie was what the now All-American pizza was called when it was introduced more than 50 years ago, brought here by the demands of pizza-hungry GIs who served in Italy during World War II.
Long a staple in peasant diet in that Mediterranean country, pizza went both royal and upscale in 1889 when a baker in Naples created a special pizza to honor the visit of King Umberto and Queen Margherita.
Prince or pauper, there's just something about those amazing Italian spices and hot, gooey cheese that always seems to hit the spot.
Here in the Coachella Valley we're lucky enough to have a wide variety of venues that dish out this mouthwatering treat. The only problem is narrowing down the contenders. If you think we left out a deserving nominee, let us hear about it!
