Inside: Peabody's

When you were a kid, Mom probably told you at least a zillion times that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. As many of us got older, we tweaked those words of wisdom by adding Bloody Marys and mimosas to our breakfast of champions.

Whether you prefer to jump-start your day with a celery stalk in your drink or by eating a hearty breakfast, Peabody's Cafe is the place.

This terrific hangout is located near the corner of Tahquitz Canyon Way and Palm Canyon Drive and can be spotted by the green awning and outdoor umbrellas. Peabody's is one of the great spots on the main drag where you can relax and watch the passing parade plus enjoy a morning mug of java ($2.99, unlimited refills). Feel free to bring along your laptop and take advantage of the free WiFi.

Debby Alexander, who opened Peabody's in 1994, wanted a place where people felt at home. Celebs from the early years are featured on posters that cover the walls and are mixed in with flat screens so you can watch your favorite sporting events. Peabody's boasts the "Best Bloody Mary in Town," and the spacious bar is front and center (draft beer is $3). Together, it makes for an eclectic blend.

Peabody's focuses on simple, delicious, American and Mexican dishes made fresh to order. Locals, who comprise a large portion of the crowd on the patio, will tell you that the Eggs Albuquerque ($10.99) is a must. Made with two poached eggs on an English muffin, it's topped with generous portions of sliced avocado, sour cream and a sensational homemade mango salsa, plus a side of O'Brien potatoes.

Peabody's offers a wide assortment of omelets ($9.99-$10.99), plus fresh-baked cinnamon rolls, muffins and scones. If your sweet tooth is calling out, be sure to order the double cinnamon French toast ($8.99) or the homemade buttermilk pancakes topped with either sautéed apples or bananas ($8.99) or strawberries and whipped cream.

But Peabody's doesn't stop at breakfast. Ease into the afternoon with one of Peabody's great sandwiches or salads. Vegetarians will find plenty to choose from, including a Garden Sandwich ($8.99). Choose wheat, rye or sourdough and a side of either potato or pasta salad, chips and salsa, potato chips or a cup of soup. Or stick with a classic and order the guacamole bacon burger ($9.99) topped with Swiss cheese, bacon and, of course, homemade guacamole.

Peabody's also serves up a wide assortment of specialty coffees and hot teas. And since the weather is starting to heat up, keep Peabody's in mind for your favorite chilled blended coffees. You will definitely be able to beat the heat with a frozen frosted latte, white chocolate symphony (decaf), extreme toffee coffee or a frozen coca-mocha nut (small $3.99/large $4.99).

And definitely make a mental note to drop by Peabody's on Saturday evenings. Karaoke Night kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and goes until last call.
