46. Florence + the Machine, 'Dog Days Are Over'
Just when you think this offbeat anthem from British pop siren Florence Welch has hit its peak, it takes things up another notch, finally climaxing in an Arcade Fire–like rush of layered vocals, thunderous percussion, harps, pianos and Lord knows what else. Welch herself is kind of like that, too—everywhere from the MTV Video Music Awards to “Ellen,” she proved time and again that just when you think you’ve got her pegged (she’s the new Tori Amos! the new Regina Spektor! the new Kate Nash!), she takes her music and her performances someplace unexpected.
