44. Deerhunter, 'Helicopter'
These Atlanta post-punk/noise/shoegaze/whatever rockers have always bathed frontman Bradford Cox’s slurred, trance-like vocals in layers of noise, murk and menace. But on this delicate, almost fragile track—one of several highlights on the band’s career-defining fourth album, “Halcyon Digest”—they’ve stripped things down to just a few looped guitar effects and a gently sloshing backbeat, letting Cox’s trademark lyrics of alienation and abandonment (“Now they are through with me”) bob along the surface like messages in prescription pill bottles. It’s beautiful, unsettling stuff.
