When I was a kid, my mom used to take me to the local J.J. Newberry's, and we would sit at the horseshoe-shaped lunch counter. My meal of choice was a thick chocolate malt in a frosty silver tumbler and a cheese sandwich.

While my tastes have become a tad more refined, my appreciation for great diner food has never disappeared. If this sounds good to you, then try Don and Sweet Sue's Café.

This little gem on Ramon Road near Date Palm Drive serves up all the classics from morning to night. Owners Steve Cox and David Cole credit their success to hard-working employees and making everything from scratch.

Just one look at the breakfast menu will convince you never to crack an egg again.

Feast on killer omelettes made with three eggs plus a side of hash browns and toast for $7.95. Definitely make sure someone in your crowd gets the pancakes (buttermilk, blueberry, granola or banana). They are so light and fluffy they may just float off the plate.

For lunch, enjoy such treats as cold meatloaf, classic French dip, hot pastrami or corned beef. And, of course, what would a diner be without the always popular egg salad, BLT and chicken fried steak topped with jack cheese and onions and served on a bun with a side of creamy Ranch dressing.

All sandwiches come with your choice of cole slaw, pasta or potato salad or a large side of seasoned french fries.

Starting at 4 p.m. daily, enjoy dinner classics, which include soup or salad and a homemade biscuit.

You'll swear Thanksgiving came early when you enjoy tender and juicy turkey breast with stuffing, vegetables, mashed potatoes, gravy and cranberry sauce.

Mac 'n' cheese, roast beef tenderloin, sautéed calves liver and old-fashioned stew are just a few more of the favorites that will make you remember those Sunday dinners from long ago.
