As female comics go, Sarah Silverman doesn’t fit the mold.
She’s publicly taunted boyfriend (former or current, depending on what tabloids you read) Jimmy Kimmel about an affair with Matt Damon in a wickedly funny song that can’t be quoted on MMX.
At 38, Silverman is on the top of her game and still exploring where her chosen profession will take her. That could be more acting gigs, like her appearances on the television series “Monk” (she guested as Marci Maven, the OCD detective’s biggest fan) or in Adam Sandler’s upcoming dramedy “Funny People.”
On Saturday, Silverman will be where she’s most comfortable — on stage performing stand-up at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.
This funny lady is so busy, the only way we could get to her was by e-mail. Here are the results:
Sarah, You’ve carved out a very distinct niche as a comic. It seems that you’re not as boxed in (in terms of subject matter) as some female comics. Why is that?
I’m not boxed in? Yeah, maybe not. ... I don’t know, I just do stuff. When it’s up to others, I think I am boxed in. People tend to not like the Jewish ladies in front of the camera unless they are playing the bitchy girlfriend or the sassy neighbor or something.
Not sure why. It’s weird, right? I like to just do my own thing. People are usually really nice about that.
You’re appearing at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino with Todd Barry and Harris Wittels, who are billed as “friends” on the press release. Are these guys really friends?
Todd and Harris are some of my favorite comics and very good friends. Todd is from NYC and is a major headliner across the country.
And Harris is a young hilarious comic who is also a writer on my show. I am in awe of both of them. You’re in for a great show!
During the recent presidential election, cycle, you were encouraging young people, but especially Jews, to “schlep” down to Florida to as a bribe to get their grandparents to vote for Obama. After the success of that part of the campaign, do you have any plans to continue the political influence peddling portion of your career?
I am working on a video with a couple friends (Dan Sterling, head writer and producer on my show, and Wayne McClammy who directed “Damon” and a bunch of “The Sarah Silverman Programs”) that we’re going to premiere on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” before the inauguration. That said, I’m not hugely political. Obama is just inspirational to me, and I was moved.
With the massive YouTube success of your song about schtupping having Matt Damon, do you have plans for a CD of new songs?
Gee, I don’t know. There should be one with all the songs from “The Sarah Silverman Program, but that’s in Comedy Central’s hands.”
